Many youths in Liberia have turned to sports betting as a source of income. They gather daily at several betting outlets in Liberia to watch the live matches and place their bets with the hope of getting profitable results.
Yekeh Kolubah, Montserrado County District10 Representative, said that very soon, he will announce a proposal to legalize sports betting in the country’s Legislature.
The Representative mentioned this on October 12 when he was spotted cutting tickets at a betting parlor. The opposition lawmaker, who is on a yearly break currently, was seen placing bets.
He said the bill would be used to regulate gambling by legalizing every part of the market. He was remarking that this might serve as a solution for the country that is undergoing economic hardship under the rule of George Weah.
At a gaming center in Monrovia, a few youths mentioned that sports betting had become their only hope to make money because they have no jobs.
Randall Kaybee, Winner’s Incorporated marketing manager, said sports betting is “changing the lives of Liberians, for example, somebody placed a bet of 50 LRD and won 233,275 Liberian dollars.”
