Nigerian Lottery Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Lottery Trust are the sole regulator in Nigeria as confirmed by Court. These two regulators who are representatives of the Nigerian government successfully defended a lawsuit. The lawsuit was against the Lagos State government and other state governments on the issue of multiple regulators in the gaming sector.
The lawsuit was initiated by the Bookmakers association of Nigeria. It was filed to determine who the legitimate regulatory body is in Nigeria. Because they have suffered the fate of paying multiple taxes and licensing fees to the state and federal government.
In the suit NO: FHC/L/CS/15992020 filed before Hon. Justice I.N Oweibo of the Lagos High Court. The judge made it clear that the federal government called the shots when it comes to gaming regulations in Nigeria. His decision was backed by the Nigerian constitution which placed regulation of lottery matters in the hands of the national assembly.
Nevertheless, this lawsuit is also a win for the Bookmakers association of Nigeria. This is because they would no longer need to answer to any other regulators except the federal representatives. The confusion that stemmed from the equivocal arrangement of regulatory affairs has come to an end.
In conclusion, this is a huge step forward in the Nigerian gaming sector. Operators are mitigated by this issue and have no excuse than to render the best gaming experience to Nigerians.
