Tanzania’s Gaming Board has set the record straight about rights to offer gambling licenses in the country. This was triggered by other bodies allegedly trying to issue licenses to gaming operators.
These bodies include other government authorities issuing licenses and permits to gaming operators. This is an outright violation of Tanzania’s Gaming Act No.4 2003.
In a statement, the Board said that it had identified several “violations” of licensing procedures, which had caused confusion for operators. It has also destabilized the standard and credibility established by the board.
The only government authority that has the right to issue gambling licenses is the Tanzania Gaming Board. The board has also made it clear that licenses will only be issued to operators who have undergone a thorough background check. Furthermore, activities of operators who did not receive license from the board will be tagged illegal.
The purpose of the clarification, read the statement, is to “eliminate the recurring confusion between operators and some business officers, cultural officers and police officers in various parts of the country”.
The confusion stems from the wrong government authority issuing licenses, the statement continued, “significantly affects the operation and management of the gaming industry in the country by causing inconvenience to operators and thus depriving the government of revenue.”
In a bid to encourage responsible gambling, the board proposed a code for gambling advertising in Tanzania. The code is supposed to guide the conduct of Gaming operators when advertising their companies. The code was proposed in November, 2021. The board is also actively responsible for the overseeing, monitoring and the regulation of the conduct of gaming activities in Tanzania.
